Valentine's Day: Turkish Delicacies at Sezai

Concept Valentin's

Valentin's on Gasometerstrasse in Zurich is an institution that has been around for 28 years, yet for many it is still a hidden gem in District 5.

The restaurant opened on Valentine’s Day, which is also where the name comes from. But honestly, it should probably have a different name. Many guests do not only come for the food, but especially for Sezai, the manager and host.

Sezai originally comes from Istanbul and trained as a chef. Today, he no longer works in the kitchen himself, but instead takes care of his guests with a lot of heart. You can feel that immediately. The atmosphere is personal, warm, and uncomplicated. You are welcomed as if you had been a regular guest for years.

His family also helps out in the service, which gives the whole place an even more familiar and welcoming feeling.

Food at Valentin's

The cuisine at Valentin's is strongly inspired by Turkish cooking and based on recipes created by Sezai himself. The food is honest, traditional, and full of flavor.

One real highlight is the fresh flatbread, which pairs perfectly with the different dishes. The slow cooked oven dishes are also highly recommended and incredibly tender and aromatic.

A classic that cannot be missed here is the Iskender Kebab. Juicy, flavorful, and exactly how you would want it to be. The Turkish salad also stands out with its freshness and intense flavors.

The dishes are uncomplicated, yet perfectly balanced in flavor. This place is not about trends, but about genuinely good food that has consistently impressed guests for years.

To finish, a piece of baklava and a Turkish coffee are the perfect ending.

My Recommendations at Valentin's

If it is your first time at Valentin's, I would recommend focusing on the classics.

Definitely order the Iskender Kebab and one of the slow cooked oven dishes to share. Pair them with the fresh flatbread and a Turkish salad.

And having a conversation with Sezai is almost part of the experience and makes the visit even more personal. :)
